Biodiversity loss<\/a> is a serious consequence of human activity on our planet, particularly in the last few hundred years, but critically since the development of modern 20th and 21st century technology and the extremely rapid growth (relative to comparatively very slow natural changes that may occur over thousands of years<\/em>) in the human exploitation of the planet\u2019s natural resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBiodiversity loss<\/strong> happens when species<\/a> disappear completely from Earth (extinction<\/a>) or when there is a decrease or disappearance of species in a specific area. Biodiversity loss means that there is a reduction in biological diversity<\/a> in a given area. The decrease can be temporary or permanent. It is temporary if the damage that led to the loss is reversible in time, for example through ecological restoration<\/a>. If this is not possible, then the decrease is permanent. The cause of most of the biodiversity loss is, generally speaking, human activities that push the planetary boundaries<\/a> too far.[1]<\/a>[2]<\/a>[3]<\/a><\/sup> These activities include habitat destruction<\/a>[4]<\/a><\/sup> (for example deforestation<\/a>) and land use<\/a> intensification (for example monoculture<\/a> farming).[5]<\/a>[6]<\/a><\/sup> Further problem areas are air<\/a> and water pollution<\/a> (including nutrient pollution<\/a>), over-exploitation<\/a>, invasive species<\/a>[7]<\/a><\/sup> and climate change<\/a>.[4<\/a><\/sup><\/em>]<\/a><\/sup>\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n
