This event is associated with some test apparatus. A part of the investigation&#8217;s effort is focused on finding the source of the energy that caused the event. Energy can&#8217;t just appear from nothing, it must come from somewhere: energy must be conserved. That is, we are discussing one of the fundamental <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Physics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">physics<\/a><\/strong> characteristics of our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Universe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Unive<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Universe\">rse<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Energy Measurement<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>We may measure <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">energy<\/a> when a body or system changes its energy state. Such an energy measurement is expressed as a quantity of <strong>work<\/strong> <strong>done<\/strong> to change the energy state relative to some reference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seaswell.net\/publishing\/science-topics\/si-science-topics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SI system of units<\/a><\/strong> the energy state change, or work done, would be measured in <strong>joules<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Forms of Energy<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Energy<\/strong> can be observed to exist in several forms. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kinetic_energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">kinetic energy<\/a><\/strong>, the <strong>energy<\/strong> a body has due to its motion within a frame of reference (e.g. a vehicle traveling with some velocity within a transport system):<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seaswell.net\/publishing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/cfpYD4-1024x315.jpg\" alt=\"Kinetic Energy\" class=\"wp-image-1311\" style=\"width:512px;height:158px\" width=\"512\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seaswell.net\/publishing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/cfpYD4-1024x315.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.seaswell.net\/publishing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/cfpYD4-300x92.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.seaswell.net\/publishing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/cfpYD4-150x46.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.seaswell.net\/publishing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/cfpYD4-768x236.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.seaswell.net\/publishing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/cfpYD4.jpg 1425w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kinetic Energy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Potential_energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">potential energy<\/a><\/strong>, the energy a body has due to its position within a gravitational field (e.g. a boulder at the top of a hill, or the water stored behind a hydro-electric dam);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thermal_energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thermal energy<\/a><\/strong>, the energy a body has due to its <strong>stored heat<\/strong> as indicated by <strong>temperature<\/strong> relative to its environment;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ccrma.stanford.edu\/~jos\/pasp\/Pressure_Confined_Kinetic_Energy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pressure energy<\/a><\/strong>, is confined kinetic energy of a <strong>compressed gas<\/strong>. It may may be measured relative to the air pressure outside of the gas container.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These are also examples of energy within <strong>nuclear physics<\/strong> and <strong>quantum mechanics<\/strong>, including the energy of an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/ems\/02_anatomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">electromagnetic energy<\/a><\/strong> (e.g. light).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conservation of Energy<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seaswell.net\/publishing\/science-topics\/e-science-topics\/#conservation-of-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Conservation of Energy<\/a>, in the sense used in this post, is the phenomena we observe that <strong>energy<\/strong> cannot be destroyed or created within our <strong>Universe<\/strong>, However, we can observe that energy can be <strong>transformed<\/strong> from one <strong>form of energy<\/strong> to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Potential Energy to Kinetic Energy<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>We can convert the <strong>potential energy<\/strong> of a body within a gravitational field into <strong>kinetic energy<\/strong>. For example, we can do this when we release a body, to fall from its original position to a lower position in the Earth&#8217;s gravitational field (e.g. <strong>Newton<\/strong>&#8216;s famous falling apple experiment). In effect, we are allowing the Earth&#8217;s gravitational field to do <strong>work<\/strong> on the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Falling stone<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>The falling stone&#8217;s kinetic energy increases at the same rate that its potential energy decreases. When the falling stone is arrested by hitting the ground, its kinetic energy gained by the fall equals its potential energy lost by the fall. But when the stone hits the ground, its kinetic energy is converted to <strong>heat<\/strong> and <strong>vibration energy<\/strong>. But both the heat and the vibrations are also forms of kinetic energy, but the kinetic energy of the vibrating molecules within the fallen stone and the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Whale breaching<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Another example is that of a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cetacean_surfacing_behaviour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">breaching whale<\/a><\/strong>: the whale expends stored <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chemical_energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chemical energy<\/a><\/strong> by propelling itself with its tail out of its natural habitat, the ocean, and into the air; its <strong>kinetic energy<\/strong> is converted to <strong>potential energy<\/strong> at the top of its breach, then back to kinetic energy as it falls back into the water, where the kinetic energy is transformed into <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sound_energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sound<\/a>, ocean wave, and water spray &#8216;energy<\/strong>&#8216;. But this time the kinetic energy is contained within a surface layer of the water. The water molecules in this layer rotate in a group within each wave. This rolling motion of the water molecules is observed as wave crests with troughs between. The energy contained within the molecules&#8217; rolling motion is transferred to neighbouring molecules. So it is the wave that moves across the sea and not the molecules which remain generally in place apart from their rolling motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sea swell<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Sea swells are large waves that move a significant distance due to prolonged periods of wind over large areas of ocean. The sea swell moves in a direction dictated by the direction of the wind&#8217;s force. The longer and stronger the wind blows in a particular direction over the water&#8217;s surface, the larger sea swell wave becomes and the longer its wavelength will be. These instruments need to be calibrated with a standard system of units of measurement.
